Waukon Trees Forever annual tree planting event moved to May 10; volunteers needed to assist

The Waukon Trees Forever Chapter annual tree planting event originally scheduled for Saturday, May 3 has now been moved to the following Saturday, May 10 due to muddy conditions. Volunteers are asked to bring shovels, rakes and gloves and meet at the Waukon City Park campground at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 10. Meeting planned for Sunday to discuss the possibility of a community meal

A meeting is being planned for Sunday, May 4 to discuss the possibility of serving a community meal on a regular basis in the Waukon area. The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon.
Discussion of the logistics of such a meal undertaking will be discussed, with a featured presentation by Karen Carlton of Waukon, who originated the community meal ideal which has prompted Sunday's meeting. Pastors of area parishes have been contacted as an initial support foundation, in addition to various community groups and social agencies.

Waukon City Council sets May 10 as Spring Clean-Up Day, addresses numerous other items

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, April 21 with a full slate of 21 regular business agenda items. Among the most far-reaching issues addressed by the Council was the setting of May 10 for the annual Spring Clean-Up Day to be held throughout the city. Further details of that event will be published in a future issue of The Standard.

Waukon Affordable Housing Rehabilitation Program looking to assist homeowners with repairs this spring

Spring is, hopefully, just around the corner, so now would be the best time for homeowners to assess any and all structural damage that may have happened during this harsh winter, or perhaps there are projects that have been placed on the back burner over the long winter months. The Affordable Housing Rehabilitation Grant for owner-occupied homeowners in the city of Waukon still has funding available to help with rehabilitation and repairs.

Volunteers needed for Waukon High School Project Prom 2014

Waukon High School Prom 2014 is scheduled for Saturday, May 3. Parents of the high school students are again hosting the annual substance-free Post Prom event at the former Waukon Junior High School gymnasium immediately following Prom, from midnight until 4 a.m.

Women's Lenten Breakfast set for Thursday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church

The Women’s Lenten Ecumenical Breakfast events are held each Thursday throughout the Lenten season at Waukon area churches. The events begin at 6:45 a.m. with breakfast, followed at 7 a.m. with a program. All women in the area are invited to attend these events taking place during the Lenten season.
St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon will be hosting the Women's Lenten Ecumenical Breakfast for Thursday, April 10. Karen Carlton will be the featured speaker for the event.

Donation of $3,600 given to Allamakee County Food Shelf

Friends of the Food Shelf and the Allamakee "Good Olde Boys" recently presented a donation check in the amount of $3,600 to the Allamakee County Food Shelf to assist the facility in its food cost share through the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, where every dollar allows the Food Shelf to cost share $11 worth of food items. The donated funds were raised at the second annual Allamakee County Food Shelf Chili and Chicken Noodle Soup Supper and Fundraiser held March 30 through meal purchases, auction proceeds and general donations.
