Sixth Annual Big Pumpkin Contest set for September 29; Registration deadline June 15

The Big Pumpkin Contest will be celebrating its sixth season this fall and is scheduled to take place September 29 in Waukon. Entry deadline for those wishing to participate in the contest has been set for June 15. There are limited seeds available for this year's contest, and the registration fee to enter a pumpkin in the contest also includes two meal tickets for the event.
Further details about this year's contest, as well as the Pork Loin Cook-Off and Pumpkin Bake-Off competitions, will be released at a later date.

Humane Society of Northeast Iowa to merge with Spay/Neuter Assistance Program of NE Iowa

The Humane Society of Northeast Iowa (HSNEI) and the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program of Northeast Iowa (SNAP) have merged to become one organization working for animals in northeast Iowa. SNAP will now be operating as part of HSNEI.

Allamakee Community School District to offer free summer breakfast and lunch programs for area youth

For the fourth consecutive year, the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) is again offering a free breakfast and lunch program for all youth, preschool age through high school seniors, Mondays through Fridays, June 4-28 and then again July 29-August 9. The Waukon Junior High cafeteria will be the site for any youth around the Waukon area and the Ethel Robinson Meehan Community Center in Harpers Ferry will also serve as a meal site for residents from that area of the school district.

Three Allamakee Community Connection students honored by Iowa Afterschool Alliance

Three students from the Allamakee Community Connections Afterschool Programs were chosen from nominees across the state of Iowa to receive awards from the Iowa Afterschool Alliance. Students were nominated by their program site coordinators and winners were determined at the state level of the program.

Waukon Park and Rec Summer Fun Program begins June 6; registration deadline is June 1

The Waukon Park and Recreation Department's Summer Fun Program is for kids 4, 5, 6 and 7 years old to do crafts and games. One group is for 4 and 5 year-olds and one group for 6 and 7 year-olds. This program will be offered Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting June 6 for five weeks. The Summer Fun Program will be held at the shelter by the ball diamond at the park. There is only room for 16 kids in each group and groups will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
