Local dentists offer free dental care during "Have a Heart" Day scheduled for February 8

For 24 years in a row the doctors and staff of Waukon Dental, Dental Associates of Decorah, P.C., Family Dentistry Associates of Monona, and Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien (celebrating 20 years) have hosted their “Have a Heart” Day. Area residents are encouraged to participate in the annual “Have a Heart” Day scheduled by area health care providers for Saturday, February 8.

Search warrant execution results in seizure of meth lab

Thursday, January 16, the Waukon Police Department and Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at 409 Third Avenue NW in Waukon, resulting in the seizure of an active methamphetamine lab and the arrest of four Waukon residents. Tod Frieden, age 43, and Andrew Lawson, age 27, were arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine. Kimberly Pearson, age 37, was also arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Alan Haag, age 28, was charged with prohibited acts, conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, a Class B felony.

Fidelity employees donate over $8,000 to charities in 2013

Fidelity Bank and Trust employees, with 18 locations throughout eastern Iowa and Southwest Wisconsin, donated money to wear “Jeans for a Cause” every other Friday during 2013 to designated charities. Fidelity Bank & Trust officers and staff contributed $8,210 in donations. The charities awarded were: Special Olympics, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, University of Iowa’s Children’s Hospital, Camp Courageous of Iowa, Northeast Iowa Community Action plus numerous local charities in its communities. The Waukon and Postville locations participated in the jean days locally.

Allamakee County Conservation to host "Full Moon Snowshoe" event January 16

The Allamakee County Conservation Board will be hosting a free snowshoe event January 16 at 6.pm. The “Fullmoon Snowshoe” event will be a guided trail hike taking place after dark to enable the participants to see the stars and full moon like they have never seen before. The event requires preregistration and is open to all ages.  However, anyone under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.  The “Fullmoon Snowshoe” is tentatively scheduled for the Forester’s Trail at Yellow River State Forest and snowshoers should meet at the Yellow River State Forest Headquarters.

Northgate Care Center remodeling project to be completed this spring

Construction at the Northgate Care Center has slowed so that the care center, ABCM Corporation and its lenders could audit costs of the project. The audit issues are now substantially complete and construction has resumed. The Northgate Care Center is projecting that the remodeling project, which includes a 3,000 square foot addition to better serve the Physical, Occupational and Speech departments and to incorporate new dining and living room spaces, is expected be completed this spring.

Family Snowshoe event scheduled for December 28

The Allamakee County Conservation Board (ACCB) will be hosting a “Family Snowshoe” Saturday, December 28 at the Yellow River State Forest Headquarters, located at 729 State Forest Road, Harpers Ferry. The event will be free of charge and open to the public. Appropriate-sized snowshoes and trekking poles will be provided by the ACCB for everyone who attends. Participants should dress for the weather with appropriate layers including outerwear, winter hats, gloves and waterproof boots.

Waukon Police Department warns of variety of scams

The Waukon Police Department is urging the public to be aware of numerous scams being attempted in the area. Police Chief Phil Young says that the police department has been notified of various scam attempts, some by mail and others by phone.
Young advises citizens not to send money or give out personal information to anyone whose identity and business affiliation can't be verified. Report any suspicious calls or solicitations to the Waukon Police Department at 563-568-3427 or the Allamakee County Sheriff's Department at 563-568-4521.
