Vera Burroughs

 

Vera M. Burroughs, 88, of Waukon died Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, December 15 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Jim Dubert and Deacon Mike Ward officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Vera Mabel Burroughs was born May 21, 1926 in Waterloo, the daughter of Henry and Edna (Trewin) Wasserfort. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dorchester and raised on her parents’ farm in the Denver area. After graduating high school, Vera lived and worked in the Waterloo area for a few years.

November 7, 1953, she married Roland “Sonny” Burroughs at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dorchester. The couple lived in Dorchester for a while before moving to Waukon. Vera was a busy homemaker, raising four children.

She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon and also belonged to the St. Jude’s Study Club. Vera volunteered at St. Patrick School, helping kids with their reading skills. She also collected hand bells.

Vera is survived by her husband, Sonny, of Waukon; her four children, Becky of Boston, MA, Paul of Waukon, Mark of Wichita Falls, TX, and Dean of Waukon; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and her five siblings.
