Lorna Winters

Lorna J. Winters, 88, of Waukon died Thursday, February 19, 2015 at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 24 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Lorna Jean Winters was born July 24, 1926 in Waukon, the daughter of Edward and Ella (Miller) Hermeier. She was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Waukon High School, where she took the normal training curriculum.
December 23, 1947 she married Clinton Dale Winters at the Zalmona Presbyterian Church. They farmed together for many years in Paint Creek Township of Allamakee County, with Lorna spending most of her farm time with the livestock. Lorna also had a long teaching career. She began teaching in local rural schools and then taught elementary classes for many years at the Waterville School. Later she taught and substituted for teachers in Waukon and Lansing schools. All the while she was teaching, she took summer classes at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, eventually earning a degree in elementary education.
Lorna was a long-time member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. She made ceramics from molds and often hosted groups in her home who would paint the pieces before she fired them in her kiln. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed fishing, dancing and going out to eat and visit with her friends. The past years she took several bus trips, especially enjoying visits to Branson, MO.
Survivors include her two children, Jim (Mary) Winters of Waukon and Debbie (Randy) Burke of Garner; three grandchildren, Tim (Patti) Winters of Chapel Hill, NC, Steve Winters of Durango, CO and Kelly Burke of Chicago, IL; two great-grandchildren, Elliott James and Honor Rose Winters; a sister, Lois Hermeier of Marshalltown; two brothers, Wayne (Barb) Hermeier of Iowa City and Gary (Diane) Hermeier of Stoddard, WI; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Hermeier of Waukon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clinton, who died in 1998; and a brother, Harlan Hermeier.
Honorary casketbearers were Tim, Steve, Elliott and Honor Winters, Kelly Burke, Steve Clark, Michael Rood, Lance Hermeier, Mae Jean Bakke, Joan Bieber, Arlene Beisker and Betty Decker. Casketbearers were Bob, Leslie, Ron and Roger Winters, and Lee and Glenn Hermeier.
