Waukon football team begins season with 30-6 victory at South Winneshiek

The Waukon football team opened its season facing one of three State semifinalists on its early-season schedule when the Indians traveled to Calmar to take on South Winneshiek Friday, August 28, a team that lost to eventual Class 1A State Champion Iowa City Regina in the state semifinals last fall but graduated a majority of its offensive and defensive leadership from that squad. Returning a majority of their own squad from last season as seniors this year, the Indians used a strong defensive effort and rattled off 24 unanswered points in the second quarter to pull away to a 30-6 season-opening victory.
The Indians will open their home season this Friday, September 4 against Decorah to continue their non-district schedule. The Vikings come off a 22-7 home loss against defending Class 2A State Champion North Fayette Valley.
