Still time to contribute to New Albin Public Library Quilt Show taking place this weekend

Friday through Sunday, October 9-11, more than 200 quilted items are expected to adorn the Community Center in New Albin. The New Albin Public Library Quilt Show will take place from 4-7 p.m. that Friday, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and from 12-4 p.m. Sunday. All proceeds from the event benefit the New Albin Public Library.
Lisa Fruechte and Karen Darling of New Albin have been organizing the show since 2006 and have seen it grow. “Most of the people sharing quilts do the quilts for fun and the enjoyment of the craft, that adds to the excitement of what we get,” said Darling. “We will have antique quilts, baby quilts, t-shirt quilts, wall hangings, table runners and quilts of all different sizes. There is always a great variety!”
The local quilting group “Loose Threads” made the raffle quilt this year. The project started with 30 people drawing a crayon at random and making a square for the raffle quilt, and it was also required to make another project out of the same color. “These projects are going to be fun to see displayed with their crayon,” said Fruechte.
Another feature at the show is the Block of the Month project done through the New Albin Library Community Education program. Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., Mary Kay Winke from Waukon will also be presenting her Doll Quilt Trunk Show. The event will also feature a collection of antique dolls from Luan Hammell of Caledonia, MN on display.
The show will once again have an antique room, door prizes, ‘to sew or not to sew raffle’, vendors, refreshments and the raffle quilt. Also on display will be some of the “Quilts of Service” made for New Albin area veterans as well as quilted items the general public are invited to bring in to display.
Anyone who has a quilt to show or who knows of anyone who wants to display a quilted item is asked to contact Lisa Fruechte at 563-544-4325 or Karen Darling at 563-544-4699. Quilted items will be needed by Wednesday, October 7 and can be picked up Sunday, October 11 at 5 p.m.
The New Albin Community Center will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, October 7 for people to bring quilted items in for display. These can be quilted items made or received, but contributors are asked to share the history of each item submitted for display.
