Janann Miene

Janann K. Miene, 77, of Waukon died Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 4 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Janann Kay Miene was born May 22, 1941 at home in Waterville, the daughter of Victor and Viola (Noack) Schlake. She was baptized and confirmed at Waterville Lutheran Church and graduated from Waterville High School. July 26, 1959, Janann married Everett Herbert Miene at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. The couple lived and farmed on his parents’ farm in Union Prairie Township.

Growing up, Janann’s family made all their own food and she later utilized those skills when raising her own children, keeping busy butchering meats, baking and canning, and tending to their very large garden of fruits and vegetables. In 1983, they sold the farm and moved into Waukon. Janann worked for the hospital for a time before starting at the button factory in Lansing, where she worked for about 15 years. When Everett went into the nursing home, nothing could stop Janann from visiting him every day. When her grandkids came to visit, she would always make sure they were well taken care of and would insist on sending cookies or other snacks home with them.

She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where she had earlier been active in their ladies’ circle. Throughout her life, Janann would face challenges light-heartedly and loved to laugh and joke around. She enjoyed traveling, whether for annual family vacations when her kids were at home or later traveling with Everett across the country. A big card player, Janann belonged to many card clubs and loved playing 500 and euchre; even when she was young, Janann would skip class with her friends to go outside to play a card game.

Janann is survived by her children: Pam (Scott) Decker of Waukon, Pauline (Danny) Marti of La Crosse, WI and Todd Miene of Irving, TX; six grandchildren: Amy and Ryan Decker, Jane (Shawn) Hansen, John (Katie) Marti and Colin and Brennan Miene; two great-grandchildren, Brady and Abigail Hansen; a brother, Chester (Darlene) Schlake of Waukon; and two sisters-in-law, Alice Schlake of Cedar Rapids and Joan Olson of Chatfield, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett, in 2014; a brother, Ronald Schlake; and a brother-in-law, Gordon Olson.
