David Morris

David Joseph Morris, age 78, of Waukon died May 22, 2019 at Tomah Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Tomah, WI. Memorial Services were held May 25 at the Waukon Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Hall, officiated by Virgil Thorstenson.

David was born November 7, 1940 to Clarence Chalmers and Wanda Bethel Morris. He completed his high school equivalency diploma and served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1965 as a tank mechanic, completing two tours in Vietnam.

David married Mary Catherine Tillman Morris December 15, 2011 in Waukon. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Show Racer Club, Iowa State Pigeon Association, National Pigeon Association and Tri-State Pigeon Association.

David served as a USDA meat inspector for 22 years.  He graduated from Iowa Lakes Community College in 1985 in small engine repair.  He had a small engine repair business in Storm Lake for several years. After it closed, he became a welder. He enjoyed threshermen shows and watching truck and tractor pulls. Upon retiring, he enjoyed hobbies such as fishing, hunting, NASCAR collecting and pigeons. In later years he enjoyed telling stories with his closest friends and family.  His love of country and fellow veterans was very strong.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Morris; his children, Joseph Morris, Susan Rutledge and Walter Morris; his step-children, Ava Cooksley and Cindy Garcia; and his grandchildren, Jordan Morris, Jacob Rutledge, Avis Cooksley, Anni Cooksley, Tucker Cooksley, Brittania Garcia and Samantha Garcia. He is preceded in death by the mother of his children, Carol Jean Roberts Morris; his father, Clarence Chalmers; and his mother, Wanda B. Morris.
