Letter to the Editor: Submitted by Patsy Larkin

To the Editor:

Just want to second the letter by Dodie Keatley in the October 11 edition of The Standard, referencing a previous letter in the September 27 edition. We must compliment our police officers and Highway Patrol for just doing their jobs. We need those people, and they need our support.

However, on the national scale we have groups in the USA who we do not know, that are doing much the same as we are now seeing in Palestine, Israel and Gaza. One man in the whole of USA is holding up the placement of our military officers. The group of women who alone can go from town to town into libraries, to have their choice of books banned. The Proud Boys, Oath Keepers on the warpath to destroy a democracy of people who elected our president.

The party that needs to elect a speaker of the house, “MAGA party”, asking the candidate to give up many concessions, such as, do not work with the other party, then setting a new rule where if he did not follow all he promised they could elect to remove him by one-person vote.

There is a candidate who wants back into office with many followers believing in him, the one who praises leaders like Putin, Hamas, Hezbollah. Then in the news, it was explained that Hamas was built in Palestine with people unaware, and now the Palestinian people are victims of a war started by Hamas.

And what is the big deal that just because one party has majority in the House that they cannot work with the other party to elect a speaker? Were they sent there to make the rules all by themselves just because they have a majority of four or five? So, half the House has to make the rules for the whole House? I do not understand! Whatever happened to cooperation? Did we not elect these four hundred people to get things done?

I hear on the news that stamps are rising in cost again. I can’t help but think of 1960 when our first son was born and his father sent a one-cent postcard with a cigar taped to it, to El Paso, TX. It arrived. I do not know how the P.O. keeps from stumbling all over itself when the last raise of six cents was only a couple of months ago, and now it’s two cents more.

I’ve heard it said that if “ifs and buts were candy and nuts we would all have a Merry Christmas”.
