Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 19 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. John Moser and Fr. Joseph Sevcik officiating. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Paint Rock Cemetery, Harpers Ferry.

Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be used to set up a scholarship in Mackay’s name.

Mackay David Mathis was born September 22, 1991 in La Crosse, WI, the son of David and Karen (Caballero) Mathis. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Ann’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. Mackay graduated from Waukon High School in 2010.

During his time in school, Mackay met who would become his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Brooke Wild. The two were married exactly 4.5 years to date as they were married June 15, 2019, when they had a beautiful wedding at the Wild family farm, which is where he also first proposed to her.

Mackay was known for caring deeply for those he loved and met, and always made a point to make everyone feel like they were somebody. He had a unique energy about him that was sure to light up any room, and he quickly became the life of any party.

He was a man who loved to work, and worked hard at that as he always wanted to provide for his family. He worked as a journeyman lineman for various electrical companies, spending most of his career with MJ Electric. When he wasn’t doing linework, you could find him working alongside his dad at Mathis Field Services that he was also very passionate about.

Mackay enjoyed many hobbies. One of his lifelong hobbies was hunting, in which deer and turkey hunting were his favorite. He especially enjoyed the company it brought while making memories with his family and Milkhouse crew. He loved spending time any way he could outdoors and had several toys that allowed him to do so. Most recently, he spent his time in his UTV, lawn tractor, or go-kart with his family. No vehicle of his was left untouched as he always made sure to add at least one sticker immediately to everything he owned.

Some other hobbies included being a proud player in the summer softball league in Harpers Ferry. He learned to enjoy horseback riding with Brooke and camping as a family. Nothing was more important to him than his family, especially his children, Wava and Weller, whom he adored and loved more than life itself.

Survivors include his wife, Brooke Mathis, and their two children, Wava and Weller, of Harpers Ferry; his parents, Dave and Karen Mathis of Lansing; a sister, Mara (Casey Bode) Mathis of Prairie Du Chien, WI; his father- and mother-in-law, Randy and Louise Wild of Lansing; his grandparents, Rupert and Martha Caballero of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Laurie (Dustin) Wild of Fennimore, WI; two brothers-in-law, Doug (Robyn) Wild of Lansing and Nick (Jess) Wild of Waterville; three nieces, Rhealee, Charli and Ariana; and four nephews, Henry, Cordell, Alex and Ezra.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Raymond and Charlotte Mathis; grandparents-in-law, Harris and Evelyn Wild and Wilmer and Norma Monserud; and an aunt-in-law, Della Fish.

Honorary casketbearers were his IBEW and MJ brothers. Casketbearers were Doug and Nick Wild, Brady Vine, Corey Welsh, Cody Mathis, Dylan Ness, Tanner Johnson and Matt Snitker.
