James Gruber

James (Jim C.) Gruber, 91, of Lansing passed away peacefully the morning of April 2, 2024 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held Sunday, April 14 at TJ Hunter’s Banquet Hall from 4-7 p.m.

There will be a private family burial Monday, April 15 at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pastor James “Buck” Buckhahn is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Oak Hill Cemetery.

James Clifford Gruber was born November 13, 1932 to Clifford and Esther (Thompson) Gruber in Lansing. He attended country school until fifth grade and then continued his education in Lansing. He graduated from Lansing High School in 1950. After graduation he farmed with his parents.

Jim was united in marriage to his dancing partner, Jean Wurtzel, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lansing February 10, 1963. From their union three sons, David, Dennis and Daryl, were born.

He was a farmer through and through. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, camping and traveling. He was always up for a good card game of euchre and pinochle. Jim was especially proud of his children and grandchildren, and he enjoyed attending their many activities.

James is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean; his children, David (Karen) of Friendswood, TX, Dennis of Homer Glen, IL, and Daryl (Sandy) of Lansing; eight grandchildren, Danielle (Stephen) Keller, Brandon Gruber, Nathan (Nicole) Gruber, Cordell (Marissa) Gruber, Kaden Gruber, Madelyn (Bryce) Bruns, Meredith (Cade Rasque) Gruber, and Mathias Gruber; his first great-grandchild, arriving in June 2024; his brothers-in-law, Norb (Helen) Wurtzel, Bob Wurtzel, Ron (Marj) Wurtzel, and Don (Julie) Wurtzel; as well as many nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth, and her husband, Dick Preston; his father- and mother-in-law, Delmar and Carrie (Anderson) Wurtzel; his brother-in-law, Dean Wurtzel; and his sisters-in-law, Teresa Wurtzel and Kay Wurtzel.
