Sandy was born June 7, 1951 to Junice (Ellefson) Bolsinger. She attended high school in Lansing, graduating from St. George High School. She married Ronald Smerud, and the couple had a daughter, Kelly. They later divorced. Sandy worked in housekeeping at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon for a time. After that, she worked at Walmart in Prairie du Chien, WI and retired from there.

She met Robert “Bob” McCoy, and they were married December 31, 1999 in Decorah. In her free time and after she retired, Sandy enjoyed spending time with her family. She looked forward to the holidays and enjoyed preparing holiday meals. She loved visits from her family and helping out with her great-grandchildren. She also liked to spend time visiting with friends, and really looked forward to Monday night bingo.

Sandy loved to listen to music, especially Lil’ Dale in the mornings on KNEI, and was always up for a card game. A favorite past time was feeding and watching the birds and squirrels that came to visit her on the deck.

Sandy is survived by her grandchildren, Jeremy (Jenny) Waters of Lansing, Josh Waters of Waukon, and Kayla Waters of Waukon; seven great-grandchildren, Brayden, Mason, James, Kaylee, Capri, Breck and Dallas; her brothers, Raymond “Butch” (Pam) Ellefson of Prairie du Chien, WI and Charlie Ellefson of Lansing; two nephews, Dave Ellefson of Lansing and Dan Ellefson, of Milford, OH; two nieces, Amy (Josh) Bahnsen of Monona, and Nicole (David Mills) Ellefson of La Crescent, MN; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Junice; her daughter, Kelly Smerud Deeney; her brother, Richard Ellefson; two grandchildren, Justin and Jessica Waters; and her husband, Bob.
