Waukon girls golf team wraps up regular season with lone home meet

Focus on the flight ... Waukon girls golf senior Carley Sweeney watches her shot in the Indians’ Monday, April 30 home dual with Oelwein. Sweeney shot a 52 to help the Indians to a 215 team score, with Oelwein not having enough golfers to formulate a team score. Standard photo by Joe Moses.

In what turned out to be its only meet of the week and its only home meet of the season, the Waukon girls golf team ended up not having a full team to compete against anyway as a depleted Oelwein squad came to Waukon with just three golfers Monday, April 30 and had to forfeit to the Indians’ team total of 215 strokes. The Tribe’s other meet of the week, a Tuesday, May 1 meet at South Winneshiek was postponed to Thursday, May 3 before finally being canceled altogether after another round of stormy weather rolled through the area.

The Waukon boys golf team was able to return to the course after another full week of canceled meets, competing in three different events this past week and tallying team totals in the 190s early on in the week to finish outside any championship results but - just like the weather - warming up later in the week to turn in one of the best team totals for Waukon boys golf in recent years. The golf Tribe hosted both Waverly-Shell Rock and Crestwood Monday, April 23, finishing in between those two schools before playing at Sumner-Fredericksburg Tuesday, April 24 and finishing behind both the host school and Waterloo Columbus. The Indians then wrapped up the week with another home meet, this time hosting New Hampton Friday, April 27 but still finishing behind the Chickasaws, 176-172.
