Allamakee County Food Shelf requests RSVP volunteers

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers to serve in the Allamakee County Food Shelf in Waukon. Alaine Meier, coordinator of the Food Shelf, reports a significant increase in the need for volunteers since the economic recession has begun. Several people who can lift and carry boxes weighing up to 50 pounds are needed Thursdays from 8:45 a.m.- 1 p.m.
The RSVP program draws upon the skills and interests of a diverse group of volunteers to serve the needs of the community. In order to become a RSVP volunteer, one must have attained 55 years of age. Volunteers have flexible schedules. Individuals are able to determine the number of hours they would like to spend volunteering, as well as when those hours are scheduled.
Orientation and training for new volunteers is provided through the RSVP program and the site(s) where volunteers will be serving. The RSVP program currently includes nine locations throughout Allamakee County. The program also includes the counties of Howard and Winneshiek, offering a variety of volunteer opportunities.
