Family Day-Family Meal event held in Allamakee County

Community Connections, Allamakee Substance Abuse Prevention and Helping Services for Northeast Iowa hosted the second annual Family Day-Family Meal in Allamakee County September 28 and October 5. Family Day is a national event that focuses on the importance of eating together as a family. Research shows that youth who eat regular meals with their families are less likely to abuse alcohol, tobacco or other drugs and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.
The Family Day events were held at the Waukon and Postville Schools. Over 300 Allamakee County residents were served at these events. Both locations served tacos, desserts and drinks to attendees. Throughout the night families had the opportunity to eat together, play games, and watch a comedy skit presented by the Allamakee Mentoring Program. Area agencies were present at the events to promote their work and educate the public on their services.
This year would not have been a success without the donations from Allamakee County businesses. Community Connections, Allamakee Substance Abuse Prevention and Helping Services for Northeast Iowa would like to acknowledge the Allamakee County Cattleman’s Association, Allamakee Dairy Promotion Board, Fareway, Kwik Star, Pamida, Hartig Drug, Quillin’s, Waukon Greenhouse, KNEI, Postville Response Coalition and Iowa State University Extension for their contributions.
