Local law enforcement reports sTEP statistics

Law enforcement agencies across the state of Iowa participated in an initiative urging motorists to buckle up and obey all traffic laws during the Thanksgiving holiday. From November 23-29, the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office, the New Albin Police Department, the Postville Police Department and the Waukon Police Department participated in this wave of enforcement, known as sTEP (special Traffic Enforcement Program.) Participation was in an effort to cut the chances of serious accidents/injuries and fatalities. As of October 20, 2009, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) reported 303 fatalities on Iowa roadways.
Combined efforts from the four departments generated the following statistics:

OWI: 2 Citations; 2 Warnings (were near legal limit but under)
Seat belt: 3 Citations; 27 Warnings
Child Restraints: 2 Warnings
Speed: 3 Citations; 60 Warnings
Stop sign/light violation: 1 Citation; 9 Warnings
Driving w/o license: 5 Citations
Suspended or Revoked DL: 4 Citations
Registration violation: 4 Citations; 12 Warnings
Narcotics Arrest: 2 Citations
Other violations: 1 Citation; 13 Warnings
Equipment violations: 37 Warnings
No Proof Insurance: 4 Citations; 13 Warnings

9 motorist assists by officer(s)

The next sTEP wave is scheduled for March 17-21, 2010 in conjunction with the week encompassing the Saint Patrick’s Day Weekend.
