Mentoring event includes Fitness Fun at the Waukon Wellness Center Feb. 20

Mentoring programs at Helping Services for Northeast Iowa invite all mentors and mentees from Howard, Allamakee and Winneshiek counties to enjoy an afternoon of activities Saturday, February 20 from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Waukon Wellness Center.
There will be activities available for all ages and abilities, including volleyball, racquetball, basketball, board games and card games. The Wellness Center is located at 1220 Third Avenue NW, across from Waukon High School. RSVP to Jill Hollowell by February 17 at 563-387-1720, ext. 121 or via email at jhollowell@helpingservices.org. This mentoring event is being hosted by the Allamakee Mentoring Program.
There is nothing better than a firsthand experience of seeing mentoring in action.  Anyone curious about becoming a mentor should take this opportunity and participate in this event. Helping Services offers mentoring events regularly to support matches and give mentors and mentees a place to gather and socialize. Contact Kathy Schwartzhoff at 563-387-1720, ext. 108 or via email at kathys@helpingservices.org to register as a guest.

There are three community-based mentoring programs operating through Helping Services: Building Bridges Through Mentoring in Winneshiek County, MY Club in Howard County and The Allamakee Mentoring Program.  There are currently 19 youth waiting to be matched with a mentor.
Mentors in the program spend four to five hours per month with their youth doing activities such as visiting the library, hiking, sledding, or participating in community service projects. Adults also have another short-term time option to volunteer as a Mentor For A Day. Mentors For A Day agree to be at mentoring events as they fit their schedule and agree to be a buddy for the youth for that three- to four-hour time span.
