Waukon is "perfect fit" for Modern Agricultural System Designs, Inc.

Modern Agricultural System Designs, Inc. opened for business in Waukon September 2, specializing in both engineering and sales. “The primary work will be to help dairymen clean up stray voltage,” says owner Daniel Meyer. “I go for the root of the problem with technical equipment to get there quicker and cheaper. Cleaning up stray voltage helps improve milk quality (lower SCC). I also work to help residents and business owners clean up harmonics caused by fluorescent lighting, computer and plasma TVs, and reduce their electric bills.”
Meyer, originally from Monona, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, a Master of Science degree from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also a technical service provider for NRCS for animal waste systems that desire EQIP funding. He has lived in Fort Collins, CO, Madison, WI, State College, PA and Ocala, FL. He has been divorced and remarried and has a blended family of seven children, with only one left in high school.
When it came to locating his business, Meyer says that Waukon was a perfect fit. “I wanted to work primarily with dairy farmers and be close to travel into Wisconsin and Minnesota,” he said. “The Waukon location fit the bill, plus the hills make it scenic. The area is cheaper to live in than cities.”
Meyer says that the lack of rewards for hard work in the job marketplace inspired him to open his own business. “Where there is a need which you can meet, you have work,” he said. “It was difficult in my three university jobs to have much of a pay increase. Hard work doesn’t always bring benefits other than job security.”
Meyer says that his job, which includes helping people improve their income, is very rewarding, but is not without its challenges. “The most challenging thing about running your own business is finding a need that you can specialize in that has a future,” Meyer said. “I went through about eight different business areas before arriving at this one. I also have the other seven sales and engineering items I can fall back on so I am diversified.”
In the future, Meyer hopes to gather research data that will prove his systems work and pay off quickly. He says he would also like to set up offices in other locations so he doesn’t have to travel as much.

When he is not working, Meyer enjoys golf, researching ideas and learning. “My favorite is alternative health products from doctors and vets. I also wrote a ‘counseling’ book called ‘Solving Life’s Problems Quicker,’ which helps people through crises spiritually,” Meyer said. “The main audience is divorced people and prisoners. I do believe God blesses people who listen to His commands in the Bible. It is ready for a second printing when funds become available.”
