Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Waukon was recently informed that local citizens in this area are receiving telephone calls from a medical company selling an ID card that can supposedly be handed to an ambulance attendant and scanned for all of that patient’s personal medical history. Veterans Memorial Hospital would like to inform the public that it does not participate with any type of system like this, so purchasing this card would be worthless in this area. In fact, this scanning system would not work on any of the many ambulance services that bring their patients to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, and quite possibly doesn’t work at any hospital in northeast Iowa. Anyone who receives such a call can tell the telemarketer that their local emergency medical service does not participate in this program so purchasing the card would do no good. If the telemarketer persists, they can be reported to the Better Business Bureau. For more information, call Jeff Mitchell, EMS Coordinator at Veterans Memorial Hospital, at 563-568-3411.
