Kyle Torkelson of Boy Scout Troop 64 in Waukon will be honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor this Sunday, November 23 at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Torkelson appeared before the Eagle Board of Review Committee September 16 and was awarded the Eagle Scout Rank.

After being a Tiger and Cub Scout and earning his Arrow of Light March 26, 2002, Torkelson joined Troop 64 April 1, 2002. He earned the ranks of Scout May 20, 2002; Tenderfoot December 2, 2002; 2nd Class Scout November 17, 2003; 1st Class Scout January 19, 2004; Star Scout October 24, 2004; Life Scout October 23, 2005; and completed his trail to Eagle Scout September 16 of this year. Torkelson has earned 25 merit badges and held positions (some multiple times) within Troop 64 as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Librarian.

Torkelson is one of approximately four percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle Rank. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow and has earned the Firem'n Chit, Red Flannel, Totin' Chip, Snorkeling, and "God and Church" awards, as well as receiving Junior Leadership Training. He has attended various weekend camp outs, summer camps, and camporees. He also attended ASA Florida National Sea Base in 2005, has assisted many of his fellow scouts with their Eagle projects, and participated in the omelet breakfasts, wreath sales, Corn Days, and Memorial Day parades. He is also a merit badge counselor for swimming.

Torkelson's Eagle Scout Project was to coordinate the construction of a 15' x 20' storage utility shed to store the track and field equipment (hurdles, high jump bars and pit, rakes, etc.) for Waukon High School. The project included digging sod, hauling gravel and cement and constructing the unit.

Torkelson would like to express his appreciation to the Allamakee Community School District, the Board of Education, the Athletic Department, and the Athletic Booster Club for funding this project. Further appreciation is also extended to Bob Wasson, Dave Herold, and Ted Snitker for their assistance in helping select a project and site location. Torkelson gratefully acknowledges Chad Kelly and the crew of Kelly Concrete Construction for their donation of labor and Larry Ashbacher of Rossville Implement and Salvage for his building expertise and reduced lumber and materials costs. Special appreciation goes to his parents, sister, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and all of his friends who assisted when the work needed to be done.

Torkelson is a senior at Waukon High School and is involved in football (co-captain), basketball, track and field, Varsity Choir, mixed chamber choir, Vox (select men's choir), band, jazz band, pit band, large group speech, National Honor Society (president), Dollars for Scholars, FBLA, and mentoring. He was recently selected to participate in the choir at the 2008 Iowa All-State Festival and is also a member of St. John's Lutheran Youth Handbell Choir and the student class representative to St. John's Lutheran Youth Organization. He plans to attend Iowa State University next fall to study Engineering.

Torkelson is the 17 year-old son of Bruce and Sue Torkelson of Waukon. His grandparents are Ivan and Eleanor Torkelson of Elgin and John and the late Esther Smith of Wadena.
