Mrs. Viola A. Manning-Strub, age 85, of Lansing closed the last chapter of her earthly life January 31, 2013 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, February 4 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Lansing with Rev. John Moser as the celebrant. Interment was held in the Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing.
Vi was born August 6, 1927 in rural Waterloo Ridge, MN to Adolph M. and Tilda T. (Kjerland) Augedahl. She shared her early life with her brother, Art, and sister, Anna. She was born two years before the Stock Market crash of 1929. Times were very hard, and some of her most memorable moments were those with her puppy, Snookums.
Vi married Cyril A. Manning April 18, 1944 in the parsonage of Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing. She worked at Lansing Button Factory for over 35 years along with working part-time at several local restaurants, including The Corner Café and The L&W/Ceil's Cafe, and she also worked for Dr. Wilson to support her family. In addition to raising her family and working, Vi was the “glue” for Cyril’s family and hosted family gatherings for many years. No one will forget her great cooking.
Cyril died in 1989, and March 14, 1991 Vi married Jim L. Strub at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing.
Viola is survived by her husband, Jim; her sons-in-law, Eugene Mueller and Rick Sundin; her daughters, Ginny (Joe Brandt), Sandee (Wolf) (Chuck) Weidenhoeft, Debbie (Jim) Curran, and Teri (Mike) Collins; her sons, Don (Rosie) and John (Mike Garrity) Manning; her grandchildren, Dawn (George) Hugo, Becky (Brandon Karczewski) Manning, Bill Wolf Jr., Anthony (Tracy) Curran, Katie (Jason) (Curran) Andrae, Agnes “Aggie” Curran, Teresa Yeoman, and Ryan, Michaela and Sean Collins.
Vi is further survived by her great-grandchildren, Hannah Rose Hugo, Zach Fowler, Chad and Chelsea Dehahn, Stefanie and Joe Marlotty, Isabelle Karczewski, Zachariah, Nathaniel and Joshua Yeoman, Camden Andrae, and Matthew, Roy, Michael, Alexis and Caitlin Manning. Vi is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Cletus Sweeney, Margaret “Peg” (Vern) (Manning) Hingten, Shirley Manning (Bob Friederich), Dolores (Monarch) Augedahl, and Pat and Betty Manning; and also by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Vi is further survived by Jim’s children, Pat (Curt) Duwe, Lee, Dennis (Mary), Nolene (Ken) Samudio, Colin and Aaron Strub and their families.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Art; her sister, Anna (Gerhard) Vickre; her husband, Cyril; her daughters, Judy (Mueller) and Mary Ellen; her sons, Ron and Tom; her son-in-law, Bill Wolf Sr.; her grandchildren, Anthony and Amber Wolf, and Michael Manning; her grandson-in-law, Lyle Yeoman; and her great-grandsons, Christopher Michael Manning and James Yeoman. She was further preceded in death by her in-laws, Anna (Jim) (Manning) Seeley, Ella (Manning) Sweeney, William “Bill” (Viola) (Ferring) Manning, Richard “Dick” Manning and Jerry “Mike” Manning.
Viola’s grandchildren served as her pallbearers.
