Word for Word

Rev. Lynn Groe

A Time for Reflection
Ecclesiastes  – “…to everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.”
At the beginning of a New Year, we often take time for reflection. I am not usually much into navel gazing, but taking time at the beginning of a new year can be an important exercise. This time of reflection has to do with the mixing of chronos and kairos time during these first days of the new year. Chronos time is the tick-tick-tick of the clock as time moves steadily onward - it is the Greek word for chronological time. Chronos time essentially dictates the rhythm of our lives.
Kairos time is the ripe time, it is the quality time we spend with one another. Kairos time is the event-filled moments that we wait for in each day. Kairos is the Greek word that defines the value of a particular moment. Time is meant to be experienced! The essence of kairos time is how much value you get out of that moment, rather than how much chronos time you put into it. Even our language reflects the recognition of kairos time when we ask, “Did you have a good time?” We are not asking about the amount of chronos time spent in a particular activity, but about the value, the quality of that time.
Often our New Year resolutions contain a promise to ourselves to manage our time better. It may be helpful to remember this difference between chronos and kairos time. Too often we bind ourselves up trying to manage our chronos activities. I am sure that you already have your day planner for this coming year, and may already have a number of chronos events on its pages.
But the bottom line is this, the power to create quality in our lives cannot be found in any planner, no matter how thoroughly we manage our chronos time. The power to create quality of life is within us, and within our kairos time. Quality of life is in our ability to develop and use our inner compass so that we can active and live with integrity. Every day brings new choices, new decisions, new surprises, new sorrows and new joys. Quality life is found in these kairos moments shared together.
May the this New Year, 2014 be filled with kairos time for you. Amen.
