What many simply termed “the rematch” between the Waukon football team and the Union Knights in their Monday, October 29 Class 2A second-round State Play-Off battle on the Knights’ home field had much more riding on it than just a bit of revenge from the Indians’ 34-33 loss suffered on that same field just about a month earlier during regular season play. But whatever the meaning; whatever one might call it, the Monday night battle played out to be a true classic high school football game between two very good football teams, with the Indians coming out on top when it mattered most with a hard-fought, 21-14 triumph. The win marks the first time a Waukon football team has won two State Play-Off games in the same season, and it moves the Indians to a Friday, November 2 Class 2A quarterfinal date at Dyersville-Beckman, 21-0 winners Monday night over New Hampton in second-round action. The Blazers boast a 10-1 record on the season that includes wins over opponents shared with the Indians such as Center Point-Urbana, 20-14, and Waterloo Columbus, 45-7. The winner of that 7 p.m. contest will then move on to the Class 2A semifinals Saturday, November 10 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls to face either Mediapolis (11-0) or Bondurant Farrar (10-1) at either 4:06 p.m. or 7:06 p.m. “We don’t know much about Beckman except that they have tremendous speed, they always seem to have great 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays at State Track, so we’ll have our work cut out for us,” Coach Snitker said. “We’ll go back to work and prepare for this game just like all the rest.”
