Waukon High School graduate, now NFL tight end, speaks with local FCA huddle ...

Recently, Waukon High School 2014 graduate Parker Hesse (center of back row), now playing tight end for the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL), spoke to the local huddle of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Hesse shared what it takes to have success in football and in life. His message was that, first and foremost, faith in Jesus and in oneself is the key to success. He also answered several questions relating to life as an NFL football player. The FCA huddle meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. at the Waukon Wellness Center. Contact local FCA Coordinator Kim Welch for additional information.

Kooiker, Snitker each sign National Letter of Intent to play football ...

A pair of Waukon football seniors signed their talents on to their respective collegiate programs during National Letter of Intent Signing Day Wednesday, February 2. Pictured at right are, left to right, Elliot Kooiker and Lincoln Snitker, both of whom helped lead the Indians to a 10-2 season record this past fall, along with the program’s fourth consecutive undefeated District Championship and its fifth consecutive advancement to the Class 2A State Play-Off Semifinals.

Waukon girls basketball team’s 1-2 result for the week includes back-to-back losses to larger schools


Single-game record 11 assists ... Waukon girls basketball junior Maggie Criswell soars toward the hoop in the Indians’ 65-60 home win over North Fayette Valley Tuesday, February 1. Criswell dished out a new single-game program record of 11 assists in the win, breaking the previous mark of 10 assists first set 12 seasons ago by 2010 Waukon High School graduate Tatum (Meyer) Wagner. Junior Maggie Criswell breaks 12-year-old single-game assist record

The Waukon girls basketball team had a fairly busy week start out well before eroding to consecutive losses this past week, beginning with a 65-60 home win over North Fayette Valley Tuesday, February 1. That win to open the week gave way to consecutive weekend losses that included a 58-35 loss at Class 4A Decorah Friday, February 4 followed by a 72-36 loss at home to Class 5A second-rated Waterloo West Saturday, February 5.

Now holding an 11-8 season record that includes a 5-4 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play, the Indians were next scheduled to wrap up their regular season schedule hosting Charles City Tuesday, February 8 before beginning postseason tournament play Saturday, February 12 at home against West Delaware. Waukon wrestling team places third at Class 2A Sectional Tournament, advances four to District Tournament Saturday


Sectional champion at 126 pounds ... Waukon wrestling 126-pound junior Jakob Regan returns Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center freshman Carter Liston to the mat in the semifinal round of the Class 2A Sectional 9 Tournament at Cresco Saturday, February 5. Regan went on to defeat Liston by 13-1 major decision on the way to claiming the 126-pound championship and advancing to the District Tournament this Saturday, February 12 in New Hampton. Regan crowned Sectional champ; Malone, Dickson and Dugan runner-up

The Waukon wrestling team began its postseason journey Saturday, February 5 at the Class 2A Sectional 9 Tournament hosted by Crestwood High School in Cresco, with four of the mat Tribe’s 13 competing wrestlers battling their way to top-two finishes in their respective weight classes to earn continuation of their season with advancement to the Class 2A District 5 Tournament at New Hampton this Saturday, February 12. Julie Connor

Julie A. Connor, 62, of Waukon passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022 with her family by her side. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, February 15 from 4-7 p.m. at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon. There will be no formal memorial service held at this time. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Julie Ann Connor was born December 20, 1959 in Caledonia, MN to Donald and Marguerite “Marge” (Schroeder) Rommes. Julie graduated from Caledonia High School in 1978 and later attended Luther College in Decorah, where she obtained her teaching degree. Julie taught for 23 years, teaching many different grades in both the Allamakee and Eastern Allamakee School Districts.

Jennifer Sletten

Jennifer L. Sletten, 42, of Waukon died suddenly Friday, February 4, 2022 in Cresco. A celebration of life will be held Monday, February 14 from 4-6:30 p.m. at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon, with a remembrance service that includes a time of sharing starting at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to bring a memory of Jennifer to share.

Jennifer Lynn Sletten was born December 12, 1979 in Iowa City, the daughter of Dale and Cris (Bjerteness) Snow. She grew up in Ridgeway and graduated from Crestwood High School in Cresco in 1998. Jennifer later received her associate’s degree in criminal justice from NICC.

Ronald Roese

Ronald H. Roese, 79, of Waukon died Saturday, February 5, 2022 at his home. Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon with Pastor Kim Gates officiating. Military honors will be held outside of the church following the service. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date in Pomeroy. Friends may greet the family from 4-7 p.m. Friday, February 11 at Martin - Grau Funeral Home in Waukon.

Ronald Harold Roese was born January 6, 1943 in Omaha, NE, the son of Fredrick W. and Florence Ida (Petty) Roese. He grew up in Pomeroy, where he graduated from high school in 1961. Ron married Loretta Peters June 6, 1965 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Pomeroy and they had one daughter, Dawn Elizabeth.

Ronald Quanrude

Ronald D. Quanrude, 77, of Waukon died Friday, February 4, 2022 at VA Central Iowa Health Care in Des Moines. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 8 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial with military honors was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Ronald Duane Quanrude was born December 5, 1944 in rural Allamakee County, the son of Harold and Ursula (Becker) Quanrude. He graduated from St. Patrick High School in Waukon in 1962. After graduating, Ron enlisted in the United States Air Force serving from 1963-1967. In 1964, Ron graduated from the technical course as a photographic repairman, which included photographic devices at Lowery AFB in Colorado.

John Regan, Jr.

John A. Regan, Jr., 74, of Waukon died suddenly Monday, January 31, 2022 in rural Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, February 7 at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon with Fr. John Moser and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial with military honors took place in the church cemetery. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements.

John Arthur Regan, Jr. was born July 8, 1947 in Decorah, the son of John A., Sr. and Kathleen (Hovden) Regan. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church, rural Waukon. John attended Howard Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1966. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years.

November 27, 1970, he married Diane M. Mathis at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry; they had three children: Jack, Marlene and Jacob. John farmed with his dad and his brother, Jim, all his life.
