Wednesday, May 26, a luncheon was held in the Waukon Middle School Gym for all employees of the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD). In addition to commemorating the end of another school year, the luncheon was held to honor employees of the district who have achieved 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of continuous service within the district along with those who are retiring from the district. Second graders from the classrooms of Mrs. Liddiard, Mrs. Voight, Mrs. Christensen and Mrs. Allison at West Elementary School in Waukon have been learning how farms help the local community and where food comes from. Friday, April 23, the classes visited Johanningmeier Dairy Farm in rural Waterville to see those concepts in action. The students learned about all the jobs that they could do on the farm, as well as how food gets from the farm to the store and then to the kitchen table. They learned about field work, calving, milking and veterinarian responsibilities. Candidate for Allamakee County Dairy Princess Madi Palmer joined the groups and shared her dairy experiences and offered dairy treats. The second graders were able to tour the milking parlor, office, calf barns, cow barns and feed storage areas. Allamakee County Farm Bureau provided the treats and the transportation to the farm. High school students who decide on their career paths early in life may be able to save on time and college tuition expense. Just ask five May 2021 Waukon High School graduates who identified their career objectives and earned the college credits during their high school academic career that they needed to also earn an Associate of Arts degree through Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC).
May 23 those five Waukon High School students received their high school diplomas and two-year transfer degrees. With all five of them being four-year university bound, the graduates plan to develop their skills and knowledge in a variety of fields, including business, marketing management, agriculture and biology. The students earned 60 college credits because of a concurrent enrollment established between NICC and Waukon High School.

Kerndt Brothers Bank has announced that Evan Kooiker has joined the bank as Senior Vice President/Chief Financial Officer. Kooiker is responsible for the bank’s accounting functions, policies and funds management activities. Kooiker joins Kerndt Brothers Bank from Prime Bank in LeMars, where he focused on accounting, investments and asset liability management. He brings over 12 years of experience in banking.
Meehan Memorial Lansing Public Library will be hosting a “Conversation with Jim Rossi” Thursday, June 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public and will be held inside the library.
Rossi is a resident of Lansing and one of the last remaining World War II Veterans in the local area. When he was just 18 years of age serving under General Patton’s Army leadership, his tank battalion came upon a horrific place called Buchenwald, a Nazi concentration camp located near Weimar, Germany.
One of the first and largest such camps, Buchenwald was created in 1937, and many of its first internees were Communists.
Rossi’s service helped liberate Europe during World War II. He will be sharing some of his stories from the diary he kept. For additional information, contact the library at 563-538-4693.
Season’s first start yields 13 Ks ... Waukon baseball sophomore pitcher Noah Hatlan fires a pitch in the Indians’ 11-1 home win in six innings over Clayton Ridge/Central Elkader to open the season Monday, May 24. Hatlan was one batter shy of the complete-game victory, giving up just two hits, no free passes and one run while striking out 13 batters. He also drew three walks and scored two runs in the win. The Waukon baseball team got its 2021 campaign off to a busy and initially promising start, equaling its entire win total from last season in just the first two games of this season with an 11-1 walk-off win at home in six innings Monday, May 24 over Clayton Ridge/Central Elkader followed by a 6-0 triumph at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, May 25. That hot start cooled off a bit over the latter half of the week, although still showing some promise with just a 3-2 loss to Class 1A sixth-rated South Winneshiek at home Wednesday, May 26 followed by a home doubleheader loss to Charles City Friday, May 28 that included a 14-4 loss in six innings followed by a 4-2 battle that also escaped the win column.

The Waukon softball team got its 2021 season off to an undefeated start this past week, with Mother Nature the only one to post an upperhand over the softball Tribe in postponing a home doubleheader with Charles City from its Thursday, May 27 origination to a June 25 date. On either side of that postponement the Lady Indians posted a pair of non-conference wins, 14-4 in six innings at Clayton Ridge Tuesday, May 25 and 6-2 at home over Kee Friday, May 28.
The Indian diamond dwellers are next scheduled to hit the road this week, playing at New Hampton Tuesday, June 1, a doubleheader at Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday, June 3, at South Winneshiek Friday, June 4 and in the North Fayette Valley Tournament Saturday, June 5. The softball Tribe will then travel to Oelwein Monday, June 7 before hosting Decorah for a doubleheader Wednesday, June 9 and then playing in the Riceville Tournament Saturday, June 12.

The Kee baseball team book-ended its initial week of the 2021 season with results on each end of the win-loss spectrum, also having a Thursday, May 27 home doubleheader with MFL/MarMac postponed by rainy weather to a new June 11 date. On either side of that rescheduling, the Hawks got their season underway with a doubleheader loss at Decorah Tuesday, May 25 by scores of 8-4 and 11-1 in five innings before wrapping up the week with a pair of wins at home in their annual Shooky Fink Tournament Saturday, May 29, including a 6-0 victory over Northwood-Kensett followed by a 5-4 triumph over Davenport West.
Rose A. Snitker, 73, of Waukon died Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 1 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Rose Ann Snitker was born November 26, 1947 in Waukon, the daughter of Edwin Thomas and Evelyn Charlotte (Glaus) Andregg. While in high school, Rose worked in the Superintendent’s office and right after graduating, she became the secretary at West Elementary School in Waukon, retiring in 2016 after 50 years of service.
