Chief Master Sergeant Andrea Scheving... Submitted photo.

Waukon High School 2003 graduate Andrea (Blocker) Scheving promoted to Chief Master Sergeant

by David M. Johnson

Women of today continue to smash glass ceilings, whether in business and industry, sports, politics, science, the military, and many other realms. Some of these accomplishments are monumental, like being awarded a Nobel Prize in Science or most recently, being elected as Vice President of the United States. Others may not ever make the nightly news, but are still well beyond worthy of all the honor and recognition their achievements may provide.

VMH, Public Health advise that those awaiting second dose of COVID-19 vaccine will receive a phone call to schedule it

Those awaiting second COVID vaccine dose will be called ... Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) and Allamakee County Public Health (ACPH) would like to alert the public that they will receive a phone call to schedule an appointment for their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine approximately two to seven days before they are due to receive that second dose. VMH and ACPH’s telephone numbers come up as “Unknown” on a Caller-ID system, and they are asking those who are waiting to be contacted regarding their second COVID-19 vaccination to answer their phones if they receive a telephone call identified as “Unknown”. Pictured above is Amy Sweeney, RN, who helps to administer the vaccines at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Submitted photo.

For those 65 years of age and older who want to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Veterans Memorial Hospital has an online sign-up option to join a waiting list. When vaccine is available, those on the list will be called to schedule an appointment.  Specific directions will be given as to the location of the vaccination clinic, as well as an appointment time.

FOR SECOND DOSES
Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) and Allamakee County Public Health (ACPH) would also like to alert the public that they will receive a phone call to schedule an appointment for their second dose approximately two to seven days before they are due to have that second inoculation. Those awaiting their second dose are reminded that they do not have to sign-up online, which is different than what they may have done for their first dose.

Local school superintendents weigh in on “School Voucher Bill”

by Julie Berg-Raymond

Superintendents from two local school districts in Allamakee County are opposed to Senate File (SF) 159, often referred to as the “school voucher bill.”

Passed by the Iowa Senate January 28, 2021, the bill is currently under consideration in the Iowa House of Representatives, initially being reviewed by the House Education Committee. If passed by the House and signed by Governor Kim Reynolds, the greatest portion of the bill would provide public funds to enable some students to attend private schools if they are currently attending one of 34 school districts in Iowa designated as under-performing schools and currently receiving certain federal support as a result of that under-performing status.

Clover Kids turn roboticists ...

Clover Kids turned roboticists after learning about robots and how they can do all kinds of jobs for people. They can go places people can’t, like Mars, or don’t want to, like a sewer. Robots don’t need to take lunch breaks or sleep so they can work 24 hours a day, unlike humans. Robots also do everyday things that humans don’t always have time for, like vacuum.

Clover Kids were challenged to be a roboticist and make an art-bot. The robot would be made out of a hexbug, markers, cup and rubber bands. The goal was to make it color without touching it. This challenge took a lot of trial and error. Clover Kids learned the robot needed to be balanced so it didn’t fall over and the size of the hexbug made a difference. They also had some fun letting the hexbug scurry around in paint and create its own masterpiece, such as pictured above.

Kee Large Group Speech Reader’s Theatre achieves All-State selection ...

The Kee High School Speech and Drama Department had one Large Group Speech performance achieve All-State honors following its State Contest held in Postville February 6. The Reader’s Theatre performance entitled “Power Play” was chosen for the honor. Students performing that All-State selection are pictured above and include, left to right, Owen Henkes, Michael Mattson, Daniel Wagner, Jada Mitchell, Alexis Johnson and Macy Manning. The piece they performed was a dramatic selection about stereotyping students in school and how judging others can destroy relationships and each other. The story has a lesson about self worth and who has the power to make a difference.

Even though there were several types of State Contest events held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those contests each still had to have three qualified judges who rated the performances that day. Those judges then went online to make their All-State nominations.

Snow days replaced by virtual learning days in the Allamakee Community School District

submitted by the Allamakee Community Education Association

Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) experienced its highly anticipated first snow day January 15 of this year, followed by three more during February. With all of the technology now available, the school district decided to approach snow days a bit differently this year, utilizing Zoom video conferencing with older students and an online program called Seesaw for younger students.

Teachers began preparing and planning weeks in advance when the district first informed them of online learning plans for weather disrupted days. Elementary schools prepared educational packets to send home and posted digital activities for their students on Seesaw and Google classroom. Students could complete their packets and activities throughout the day and interact with their teacher through email or Seesaw messages. Students then turned their packets in when they returned to in-person learning.
