Entries sought in County Extension's non-traditional quilt block competition

Quilt block designs are being sought to represent Allamakee County in an outdoor mural at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. The winning designs from each of Iowa’s 99 counties will be constructed in tile on the exterior of the new Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center, a multi-use facility scheduled to open in 2010.

Allamakee Farmers Market accepting credit, EBT cards

Buying local food at the farmers market just became easier. The Allamakee Farmers Market now has the ability to process credit and debit cards on a new wireless machine.
The machine is also able to process EBT cards. EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) is the technology used today for Food Stamp purchases. Rather than having paper vouchers like they did years ago, Food Stamp clients now have all their benefits saved electronically on plastic cards much like debit or credit cards.

Volunteers to conduct door-to-door surveys for community improvement

Volunteers for the City of Waukon's community betterment initiative have materials in hand and are ready to come and visit city residents. The volunteers will be going door-to-door to complete a short survey that will take just a few minutes.
The data collected will be used to determine potential program or assistance eligibility for Waukon residents. Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission (UERPC) will receive the completed surveys and will review and compile the information.

Beverage Server Training offered to Allamakee County retailers

August 10 the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and Helping Services for Northeast Iowa conducted a Beverage Server Training in the NICC Center in Waukon. This training was made available at no cost to retailers in Allamakee County by the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws grant through the First Judicial District Juvenile Court Services.

Boy Scouts of America celebrate 95 years

The Boy Scout program was first developed in England by Lord Robert Baden-Powell and was brought to America because a boy did a “Good Turn” - an act of kindness for which he sought no reward. It happens that an American named William D. Boyce lost his way on the foggy streets of London. A boy walked up and asked if he could be of assistance. Mr. Boyce told him where he wanted to go and the boy led him to his destination. But when Boyce offered him some money, the boy said “No thank you, I am a scout. I won’t take anything for helping.” Mr.
