Gregory James Rosendahl was born September 10, 1953 in Caledonia, MN, the son of Eddie and Mary (Nierling) Rosendahl. He was baptized and confirmed at Waterloo Ridge Church in Dorchester. Greg attended school in Dorchester and later in Waukon, graduating from Waukon High School in 1971; he later attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. After graduation, Greg enlisted in the U.S. Air Force from 1971-1975; he was primarily stationed in New Mexico and served in the Philippines in the military police. In 1975, Greg joined the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department and worked there for 22 years; he retired in 1997 as the Chief Deputy. September 28, 1985, Greg married Shirleen “Sam” (Fritz) Moe at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon, and together they entered into many adventures. They started the Classic Lube and Wash and later Greg managed the Ship Shape Carwash in Onalaska, WI, for five years. He then worked for Dan McMillan for a while until Dan’s death. Greg and Sam purchased Danny Mac’s Junkyard and Wrecker Service; Greg’s passion was working with the wreckers, day or night. They eventually sold the junkyard and Greg worked from home running the wrecker service. In 2012, they sold the wrecker business when Greg developed health issues.
Greg and Sam took many trips, including to Jamaica, and have very fond memories of their time in Ireland. Greg got to fulfill his dream of seeing a live NASCAR race when he went to the Daytona 500 this year and later went to Texas to his grandson’s graduation. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon and belonged to the American Legion in Spring Grove, MN, for 22 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR, and was a big supporter of the Iowa Lottery. He liked working on cars and going on car cruises; he started the first classic car cruise in Waukon. Mostly, Greg really loved spending time with his kids and grandkids.
