Michael Mooney

Michael Cyril Mooney, 55, of New Albin passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Rochester, MN. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, June 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, New Albin, with Rev. John Moser as the Celebrant. Burial followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, New Albin.
Mike was born November 3, 1959 to Cyril and Leona (O’Neill) Mooney in Waukon. Michael was joined in marriage with his loving wife, Sheila Quandahl, May 7, 1988 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Mike loved his job at Dairyland Power, working his way up to supervisor over the last 28 rewarding years.
Mike was a man of many talents and hobbies, from fabricating anything he needed in his self-built shop, to remodeling the family house. Mike also loved spending weekends hauling sand in his dump truck to local dairy farmers for cattle bedding. Mike always put others before himself. Regardless of who needed help, strangers or family, Mike was always there sharing his wisdom or his resources. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his family, which meant the world to him.
People who knew Mike would remember him by his unforgettable smile and his unbreakable positive attitude. No matter the circumstances, Mike would always ask, “How are you today?” His concern was never for himself, but always for others. Despite all the odds being against Mike for the past 18 years, he would always say, “Don’t worry about me, I’ll get going again.” Mike was an advocate for so many people who were struggling against cancer.
Michael is survived by his wife, Sheila; his children, Kala, Jacob and Kristina; his mother, Leona Mooney; and a brother, Matt (Rita) Mooney. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Cyril Mooney, in 2010; a sister, Joanne Mooney, in 1972; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Lansing assisted the family with arrangements.
