ACSD Music Department to host sixth annual Pop's Concert February 27

The Music Department of the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) will be hosting the sixth annual Pop’s Concert Saturday, February 27 at the Waukon Junior High School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with concert time at 7:30 p.m. The Pop’s Concert features high energy musical numbers from the 1950s through today. Most every musical group at the Waukon Junior High and High School participate in this concert, including the jazz bands, bucket bands and all vocal groups in grades 7-12, and even an elementary vocal group. Costumes are included in most every number performed at the concert and many numbers are even choreographed.
The Pop’s Concert is an annual fund raising event sponsored by the Allamakee Music Boosters. It replaced the Spaghetti Supper six years ago and has proven to be a very popular change by all involved and all who attend the event. "The Pop's Concert has become so popular. The students are excited to perform for a full house of parents and community members,” states JoAnn Sherman, Waukon High School Band Director. “This year's concert will once again be a night full of energy with music spanning from the '50s to present day."
Some of the numbers performed at this year's event will include "Lollipop,” “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go,” “The Book of Love,” “Shenandoah,” “Build Me Up, Buttercup,” “Popular,” “Bring Him Home,” and “Lean on Me.” Plus, the drumline and high school band will perform “Hoe Down” and the jazz bands will perform “Take Your Time,” “Groovin’ Hard,” “My Only Wish,” and “Back in the Day.”
"I am looking forward to a night at the Pop's and hope to carry on the tradition of excellence and enjoyment in the presence of our fine arts community,” adds Ethan Adams, Waukon High School Vocal Music Director. "I look forward to seeing everyone Saturday, February 27." The money raised from this event has been allocated by the Allamakee Music Boosters to help purchase items such as drumline equipment, risers, pianos and various pieces of equipment for all grades, as well as providing scholarships for students attending camps. The Pop’s Concert is open to the public for a general admission fee available on a first come, first served basis in the bleachers and chairs located in the back of the gym. Tables for this event have already been sold out. For more information and for questions, call Shelly Lydon at 563-568-8670 or e-mail her at www.WaukonMusical@live.com. Submitted photo.
