Peter Walenceus

Peter P. Walenceus, 86, of Hazleton died Saturday afternoon, September 17, 2016 at Arlington Place Assisted Living in Oelwein. Funeral Service was held Tuesday, September 20 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein with Deacon Jim Patera officiating. Interment was at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein with a Graveside Military Service conducted by the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post #9.

Peter Paul Walenceus was born February 27, 1930 in Oelwein, the son of Peter Paul and Sally (Berdasius) Walenceus. He graduated from Oelwein Community High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Peter was united in marriage to Carol Ann Fuhrman February 7, 1965 in Oelwein. The family made their home in Oelwein and two children were born to this union, Bill and Lynne.

Peter worked at Donaldson Company in Oelwein for over 20 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Oelwein American Legion. Peter was an avid fan of the Boston Celtics, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, aviation, bowling, dancing, playing cards and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a fun person to be around who always had a story to tell.

Peter is survived by his son, Bill (Tammy) Walenceus of Westgate; his daughter, Lynne (Dennis) Koch of Oelwein; five grandchildren, Miles Walenceus of Cedar Falls, Ann Marie Walenceus of Ames, Rachel Walenceus of Westgate, Adam Koch of Waverly and Belle Koch of Waverly; two brothers, John (Donna) Walenceus of Auburn, WA and Charles Walenceus of Perry, GA; a brother-in-law, Russell Bartels of Arkansas; three sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Kenny Mosher of Aurora, Mary and Warren Kane of Oelwein, and Janet and Joe Gibbs of Independence; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol, who died July 10, 2008; and two sisters, Joan (Dave) Crawford and Sally Bartels.
