The Waukon baseball team was dealt some early week losses before recovering to win two of three final games during this past week. One of those early losses had already played out to Waukon’s first Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) victory and win streak of the season in the previous week, but a 7-4 home victory over Charles City from Friday, June 23, instead, was ruled a forfeit loss after this season’s new pitch count rule revealed a miscalculation in the Indian pitching rotation that did not allow enough rest time, wiping that lone NEIC win for the Indians away on a technicality.

On the field, the Indians also started the week with a home doubleheader loss to Decorah Monday, June 26 by scores of 15-5 in six innings and 10-0 in five frames. The baseball Tribe rebounded from those early week blows to mount another first win streak of the season that also included another first NEIC win of the season, starting that streak with an 18-13 marathon victory in nine innings at Postville Thursday, June 29 before posting that streak with that first NEIC win, 10-4 over Oelwein at home in a home doubleheader split with the Huskies Friday, June 30 that also featured a 4-3 Indian loss in the nightcap in nine more innings.

Now holding a season record of 6-18, including a 1-14 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference play, the Indians were next scheduled to wrap up their regular season schedule on the road with a Monday, July 3 doubleheader at Class 2A top-rated New Hampton before playing at Crestwood Wednesday, July 5. Postseason tournament play is scheduled to begin for the Indians July 8 at home against Starmont, beginning at 7 p.m. Further details of the Tribe’s postseason tournament trail appear in a shaded box elsewhere on these same Sports pages in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.
