Allamakee County Veterans Services Office has copies of Vietnam War Commemorative book packages available for free to designated veterans

The Allamakee County Veterans Services Office has received a shipment of specially-published books in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The initial limited shipment of books is being made available to any veteran who served in a “Boots on Ground” capacity in Vietnam or as “Brown Water Navy” on the inland waters of Vietnam. The book is also available to any surviving spouses of these specifically-listed veterans.

The book, entitled “A Time to Honor: Stories of Service, Duty and Sacrifice,” is a commemorative collection that honors the service, duty and sacrifice of Vietnam veterans with minimal attention to the divisive historical polices of war. In addition to the hardbound, 175-page book, the overall commemorative package also includes a 60-minute feature documentary entitled “The Journey Home,” which includes interviews of Vietnam veterans from all over the country, and an e-book with no sharing restrictions, as well as an online repository with print function for all Iowa-specific stories.

The Allamakee County Veterans Services Office, located in the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon, has received 232 such commemorative packages. That number is only about half of the actual number of Vietnam veterans from Allamakee County, but if the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs receives more funding, additional books will be made available.

That state agency is looking for donations. Anyone wishing to contribute to help fund a second printing of the book may do so by mailing checks, made payable to Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, to: Iowa Commission of Veterans Affairs, 7105 N.W. 70th Ave., Camp Dodge, Building 3465, Johnston, IA 50131 with a “Vietnam book” check notation.

Any “Boots on Ground” or “Brown Water Navy” Vietnam Veteran who would like to pick up their complementary copy of the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration package is asked to bring their DD214 and proof of county residency for eligibility to the Allamakee County Veterans Services Office located in the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon. Anyone seeking further information may contact the Allamakee County Veterans Services Office at 563-568-6135.

Liberation of Kuwait 25th anniversary book is also available

The Allamakee County Veterans Services Office has also received seven copies of the 25th Anniversary of the Liberation of Kuwait book. There will be one in each of the six libraries throughout Allamakee County and one in the Allamakee County Veterans Services Office in the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon for people to view. There is also a documentary video included with this book.
