Waukon football team will travel to Clear Lake to open State Play-Offs

The Waukon football team will be returning to the Class 2A State Play-Off scene after just missing out last season, entering the season grand finale series as the District 4 runner-up with a 6-1 district mark after a 56-21 home victory over North Fayette Valley Friday, October 20. The Indians were about 30 seconds away from ending up as District champions, but a touchdown by Cascade with less than 30 seconds left gave the Cougars a 28-21 home win over Union Friday night, giving the Cougars the Class 2A District 4 championship with a 7-0 district record, 9-0 overall.
Holding an 8-1 overall record on the season, the Indians have been paired up in the opening round of the Class 2A State Play-Off bracket with the Clear Lake Lions, the Class 2A District 2 runner-up at 7-2 overall after falling to New Hampton this past Friday night, 14-7, in a battle for that district's championship nod. The Indians' first-round play-off match-up with the Lions will take place this Friday, October 27 in Clear Lake, beginning at 7 p.m.
The winner of that October 28 contest will then advance on to a Friday, November 3 quarterfinal match-up to face the winner of the first-round match-up featuring Dike-New Hartford (6-3 overall) at New Hampton (7-2 overall). New Hampton's first loss of the year came in Week 2 of this season at Waukon, 28-20, with the Chickasaws also falling at fellow Northeast Iowa Conference school Crestwood, 13-7, for their only loss in district play this season.
Clear Lake features an offensive attack similar to the Indians in its balance between the pass and run. The Lions have amassed more than 1,700 yards through the air and more than 1,300 yards on the ground, although in a more balanced rushing attack with three ballcarriers right around 300 to 500 yards on the season.
The two other teams from the Indians' Class 2A District 4 that were also vying for State Play-Off contention right down to the wire Friday night both also made the State Play-Offs, and will be featured in the same initial bracket on the opposite half of the overall bracket from where the Indians were placed. District 4 champion Cascade (9-0 overall) will host West Liberty (6-3 overall and District 5 runner-up) and Union (6-3 overall) will play at Aplington-Parkersburg (8-1 overall and District 3 champion), with the winners of those two games then facing off the following Friday as well.
Complete coverage of the Waukon football team's win over North Fayette Valley will be published in the October 25 edition of The Standard.
