Gaylord Schoh
Gaylord H. Schoh, 85, of Waukon died Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 28 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Gaylord Henry Schoh was born August 13, 1932 at the home of his aunt in Eitzen, MN; he was the son of Earl and Lillie (Staggemeier) Schoh of Dorchester. He attended school in Dorchester through the eighth grade and would walk two miles each day to get to school. There were three boys in his class and when they had finished their work, the teacher would let them go fishing in the creek near school or go horseback riding at a nearby farm.
Gaylord worked on the family farm until he was 20 and then entered the U.S. Army for two years. When he was discharged, he went to work for Johnson Brothers Construction Company, building the highway from La Crescent to Winona, MN. Gaylord went to work for F.S. in Waukon as a petroleum salesman for 25 years, and then began to work with agronomy and animal nutrition for another six years. He retired in 1988.
August 9, 1957, Gaylord was united in marriage to Ruby Richards at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in New Albin. Two sons were born to this union.
Besides working for F.S., Gaylord and Ruby farmed on a small scale for several years; they raised beef cattle and for one year also raised hogs. He liked farming more than anything and had the most fun with Ruby at that time.
An avid outdoorsman, Gaylord enjoyed hunting and fishing, water skiing, snowmobiling, camping and hunting mushrooms. He liked visiting with family and friends, playing cards, bowling, dancing and drinking beer. Gaylord also partook in some unusual things, like duck hunting with Ruby. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and the American Legion. For several years, he belonged to the Allamakee Antique Auto Club and drove a red 1970 Oldsmobile convertible.
Gaylord is survived by Ruby, his wife of 60 years, of Waukon; one son, Tim, of Miami Beach, FL; two sisters, Joyce (Donald) Bakke of Waukon and Lilah (Butch) Troendle of Lansing; two brothers, Leon (Jane) Schoh of Waukon and Joe (Pat) Schoh of Dorchester; a sister-in-law, Annette Schoh of New Albin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Todd; a brother, Donald Schoh; a sister, Janet, and her husband, Floyd Oseth; his brothers-in-law, Bernet and Bob Richards and Gene Peske; and his sisters-in-law, Gladys and Helen Richards and Harriet Peske.
