Junior Michael Sweeney rewrites single-season scoring record set three decades ago by Scott Sawyer
The stripes on the floor proved to be the difference in the Waukon boys basketball team having its season ended or moving further down the postseason tournament trail, as the Indians survived their Class 2A District 7 semifinals match-up with Jesup with a 59-56 escape Thursday, February 15. Playing to an initial 20-6 lead after just one period, the Indians had to fend off a methodical comeback effort by the visiting J-Hawks that cut that lead to just a single point in the final seconds.
The Indians’ main scoring edge came at the free throw line, where their 12-for-19 effort proved to be more than good enough to top Jesup’s four-for-10 result, including a seven-for-11 Indian effort in the decisive fourth frame. The Indians also dropped in just one more three-point blast than the J-Hawks, but were outscored by a 52-47 result overall from the floor. Also holding a slight, 31-26 rebounding edge, the Indians had just one more steal than Jesup and dished out 16 assists in their 20 made field goals in the contest.
