Dan Byrnes of rural Waukon is announcing his candidacy for Allamakee County Supervisor and will seek another four-year term during this year’s election. He was first elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2014 and is nearing completion of that initial term in office.

“As a supervisor, I’ve gained valuable knowledge, experience and an understanding of county government which will help me serve the people of Allamakee well during the next four years,” said Byrnes. He underscored his commitment to listening to all viewpoints by saying, “the people of Allamakee County deserve to have their voices heard and respected.”

A top priority for Byrnes will continue to be fiscal responsibility. “Budgetary challenges lie ahead due to the state legislature’s deep cuts to counties and towns. Experience in county government and good judgment will be essential to working with future budgets to provide vital services and meet future infrastructure needs,” said Byrnes. His concern is that due to cuts by the state legislature, “taxpayers will be left holding the bag.”

Another priority for Byrnes is public safety and emergency services. He has worked with local law enforcement ensuring that they have the resources they need to protect and serve the county’s residents. Along with safe communities, building a positive environment for families to live and for businesses to grow are of importance to Byrnes.

“Economic development is vital to our communities, as is supporting new and established farmers,” he stated.

Byrnes lives in rural Waukon with his wife, Traci, and their daughter, Natalie. Traci is an Instructional Coach with the Allamakee Community School District. The Byrnes family belongs to St. Patrick Catholic Church. Dan has farmed for 30 years on the family century farm. In addition to farming, he currently is an insurance agent with GF Mutual in Waukon.

As a lifelong resident of Allamakee County, Byrnes has been very involved in the community. He has served on the ISU Extension Council and as a Soil Water Conservation Commissioner. Byrnes is currently serving as director of the Equity Northeast Iowa Livestock Sales Board. He is a member of the Farm Bureau and the Cattlemen’s Association. As a Supervisor, Byrnes also serves on numerous local and regional boards representing Allamakee County.
