Stephen “Steve” M. Smith, 65, of rural Postville passed away Sunday, May 6, 2018 near his home in rural Postville. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Donations in Stephen’s honor can be made to Decorah Human Powered Trails as he was so proud of his daughter’s mountain biking adventures. Donations can be sent to: Decorah Park-Rec., DHPT, P.O. Box 513, Decorah, IA 52101; checks payable to DHPT.
Stephen Michael Smith was born July 18, 1952 in Waukon, the son of Ivan and Esther (May) Smith. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1970. In 1979 he married Jan Warren and in 1984 they welcomed their daughter, Josie Leah Smith. Stephen and Jan later divorced.
Steve was well-liked by all who knew him. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours over the years hunting, trapping, fishing, mushroom hunting and hunting for arrowheads, and never shied away from a good conversation. When he was not working at Stanley Black and Decker in Decorah, you could find him working on projects at home. He was never one to sit idle, there were too many good things to do.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to auctions, visiting his daughter and son-in-law at Decorah Bicycles, and visiting his “grandcats,” Cordie, Phoebe and Figgy. He was also very proud to have one of his daughter’s favorite mountain bikes named after him.
Steve is survived by his daughter, Josie (Travis Greentree) Smith of Decorah; his siblings, Sylvia Roffman of Waukon, William “Bill” Smith of Postville and Lorraine (Maury) Gallagher of Postville; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be greatly missed. Steve is preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Donna Franklin and Gloria Kervin.
