Dr. Alden Wiley

Dr. Alden F. Wiley, 91, of Waukon died Monday, December 10, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 15 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Pastor Matthew Majewski officiating. Burial with military rites was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Alden Francis Wiley was born October 24, 1927 in West Union, the son of Frank and Alta (Palmer) Wiley. He graduated from West Union High School in 1945; while he was in high school he wrote a cartoon column for the West Union Newspaper. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving as a weatherman until he was honorably discharged in 1947.

After the service, he attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette before starting at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where he received a Doctor of Medicine degree. Doc moved to Lansing, MI, completing his residency at Sparrow Hospital. This is where he met Donna Jane Carlson and they were united in marriage November 28, 1953 in Lansing, MI.

In 1958, they moved to Waukon, where he opened his own family medical practice. Doc served on the Veterans Memorial Hospital board of directors as well as coroner for Allamakee County for several years, in addition to seeing residents at several area nursing homes.

Doc also did some farming for a long time, raising crops and planting thousands of trees. Besides farming, he enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. After taking a course in Waukon, he received his pilot’s license and flew for several years.

Survivors include his three children: Jerry (Bonita) Wiley of Bondurant, David (Teresa) Wiley of Lansing and Eva (Tom) Denny of San Tan Valley, AZ; five grandchildren: Lea (Michael) Toland, Daniel Wiley, Renae (Matt) Campbell, Krista (Kevin) Lepore and Nathan Wiley; eight great-grandchildren: Rylan, Annabelle, Hayden and Cullin Toland, Lilly Lepore, and MaCallister, Finley and Montgomery Campbell; and his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wiley of Strawberry Point. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna, who died in 2016; a son, John Wiley; a grandson, Nicklas Denny; one brother, Michael Wiley; and two sisters: Josephine (Claire) Hugh and Mayta Wilson-Wiley.

Casketbearers were Dave, Pat, Paul and Nathan Wiley, Kevin Lepore, Curt Boose and Dave Mathis.
