Margaret Stortz

Margaret Mary Stortz, 90, of Waukon died Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 19 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Margaret Mary Stortz was born December 28, 1928 in rural Decorah, the daughter of Leonard and Vera (Stoskopf) Stortz. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, graduated from St. Patrick High School in Waukon and received her teaching certificate from Luther College in Decorah.

From 1947-1951, Margaret taught at Union Prairie Township country school, where she was paid $190 per month. She then went to work for Berg Implement and then Allamakee Implement, both in Waukon, as a bookkeeper before she retired. Margaret was a caregiver to her parents and also did some babysitting for her nieces and nephews.

Margaret was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she helped with bingo, and was very involved with the women’s CEW. She enjoyed making pottery, painting pictures, working in her garden, and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include two brothers, Francis (Kathryn) Stortz and James (Shirley) Stortz, both of Waukon; a sister, Patricia (Russell) Schirm of Marion; a brother-in-law, Ron Akre; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Elizabeth Akre.

Honorary casketbearers were Michelle Dickson, Sara Hartson, Jessica Klang, Lisa Keel, Jamie LaVelle, Julie Stumbo and Mary Frances Burke. Casketbearers were Brian, Joe, Steve and Tyler Stortz, Andrew Dickson and Dan Schirm.
