She was baptized and confirmed at St. John the Baptist-West Ridge Catholic Church in rural Waukon and graduated from St. Patrick High School in Waukon. August 6, 1955, Shirley married Leon John Schulte at St. John the Baptist-West Ridge.

Besides farming with Leon, Shirley worked for many years at the Schultz Brothers store in Waukon. While raising six children, she also took care of various other family members. Shirley loved to bake for her family, especially bread, cakes and banana muffins, and cooked many Sunday breakfast and dinners; when Leon and the kids were working the fields, she’d bring them lunches as well.

She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon and participated in many church activities. She also was a volunteer Cub Scout leader. Shirley liked sewing, boating on the Mississippi and spending time with friends. She enjoyed traveling around with Leon to visit antique shops and shows.
