Waukon girls basketball team falls to pair of NEIC leaders in rare winless week

The Waukon girls basketball team ran the gauntlet of playing the top two teams in the Northeast Iowa Conference this past week, falling to both but in markedly different ways. The Indians first battled Class 3A second-rated Crestwood to overtime before falling by a 69-56 defeat on the road, and then were held to their lowest scoring total since December of 2016 in falling at home to Class 4A ninth-rated Waverly-Shell Rock by a 46-20 final result Friday, January 31.

Sporting a 10-7 season record that includes a now 4-5 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference competition, the Lady Indians are next scheduled for a full late-week slate this week, making up a January 24 weather postponement at home against Oelwein Thursday, February 6 before traveling to Charles City Friday, February 7 and then playing at Jesup Saturday, February 8. The Tribe will then wrap up its regular season hosting Decorah Tuesday, February 11 before beginning postseason tournament play slated to begin February 15 for Class 3A, with location, match-up and time specifics scheduled to be released later this week by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
