Library to host Cultivate Hardwood Log Mushrooms program ...

Robey Memorial Library in Waukon offers a variety of learning opportunities throughout the year with its Live & Learn series. All programs are free (unless otherwise noted), but registration is encouraged.

Thursday, February 27 at 5:30 p.m., Robey Memorial Library is hosting a Cultivate Hardwood Log Mushrooms program presented by Stone Hollow Gardens and Shroomery of Dubuque. Emily and Christopher Appelman of Stone Hollow Gardens and Shroomery run a homestead in the Driftless Region. The Appelmans have hardwood log cultivated mushrooms on their homestead for five years.

Those attending will learn from experienced mushroom log cultivators how to small-scale log grow gourmet and medicinal mushrooms, receiving hands-on experience in the inoculation process. Attendees will also learn the importance mushrooms hold in everyday life within the human body and the environment, and they can discover the difference between bag grown and hardwood log grown mushrooms as well as the challenges and advantages presented by each method. This program is presented in part by the Allamakee County Master Gardeners. For additional information, contact Robey Memorial Library at 563-568-4424 or at www.waukon.lib.ia.us.
