Jean Berge

Jean A. Berge, 96, of Waukon died Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. A private family graveside service was held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements. Jean Audrey Evans Berge was born June 13, 1923 in Postville, the daughter of Milo and Alice (Meier) Folsom. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon, attended Allamakee country schools and Waukon High School, and later received her GED.

December 23, 1939, she married Chester John Evans at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Chester died in 1957. Jean was a certified dietary technician and worked at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon as a dietary supervisor for over 30 years. Jean was also a foster parent and worked at Kwik Trip. December 11, 1971, she married Carl Theodore Berge at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Carl died in 1989.

Jean was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she was active in the ladies groups. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Jean enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens, baking and cleaning. She loved to travel throughout the United States, especially to see her family, and took bus trips with her sister, Patsy.

Survivors include her children: Neil (Malinda) Evans of The Villages, FL, Larry (Ellen) Evans of Knoxville, TN and Gayle Evans of Waukon; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Patsy Kerndt of Lansing; and a daughter-in-law, Eileen Evans of Geneva, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Chester and Carl; a son, Grant Evans; a grandson, Brian Evans; a sister, Betty (Ralph) Shafer; two brothers, Charles (Pearl) Folsom and Roland (Irene) Folsom; and a brother-in-law, Donald Kerndt.
