Successful June blood drive; New donors always welcome

The LifeServe Blood Center reported that a very successful blood drive was held in Waukon Monday, June 1. A total of 45 units were collected, surpassing the goal by three units. Six  new donors joined the donor list. These 45 units of collected blood will save 135 lives.

“June was another successful blood drive - I am amazed at the number of donors we are seeing in Waukon - what a blessing!,” states Kathie Gayther, Territory Representative of the  Life Serve Blood Center.  “There were six new donors this drive. Keep them coming!”

The local blood drives continue to be held during COVID-19 since the need for blood does not stop. Life Serve team members only report to work if they are healthy and only healthy donors are eligible to give blood. Blood drives are essential medical services and not considered mass gatherings. The number of donors is limited to ensure donor separation and staff has strict cleaning and disinfection schedules. Other measures are also in place to ensure the safety of the blood supply so these lifesaving donations can continue during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are very excited to be able to offer a promotion to Waukon Community at the July 9 blood drive,” adds Gayther. “We will be having a friendly competition between emergency services agencies in Waukon. Donors will be able to ‘pledge their pint’ for the agency (Fire, EMS, Police) they would like their pint to support. Each donor will receive a voucher for a free t-shirt.”

The next blood drive will be held Thursday, July 9 from Noon to 5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in south Waukon. The LifeServe Blood Center is always welcoming new blood donors to donate. Donating blood is safe, simple and it saves lives. Blood donors have a unique opportunity to contribute to their community by making a life-saving blood donation.  Everyone who registers to donate blood goes through four simple steps: registration, donor history and mini-physical, blood donation and snacks.
