Waukon Music Departments hosting annual Pops Concert this Friday ...

The Waukon High School and Middle School Music Departments will be hosting their 11th annual Pops Concert this Friday night, February 26 at the Waukon Middle School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with concert time at 7 p.m. The Pops Concert is an annual fundraising event sponsored by the Allamakee Music Boosters. The Pops Concert features high energy musical numbers from the 1950s through today. Groups performing will include the high school and middle school choirs, high school and middle school jazz bands, drumline, featured soloists, song and dance skits and emcees. The Pops Concert continues to feature new musical talents each year and has become a must-see event for the Waukon community.

“I think it is wonderful that we are able to present the Pops concert this year, even in the midst of this pandemic,” states JoAnn Sherman, Waukon High School Band Director. “This performance is both a student and family favorite. I hope everyone will appreciate the work that has been put into this performance, even though we have to work things differently this year for safety reasons. I’m glad we can present live music to our community.”

Some of the numbers performed this year by the choirs will include “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas, “SOS” from Mamma Mia, and “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire. The middle school and high school jazz bands will be featured playing the “Bb Blues”, “Summertime”, “Tyrannosaurus Charlie” and “Hog’s Breath Café”.  The Waukon High School Drum Line will be playing many catchy beats with the high school band joining them for their rendition of “The Twist”.

“It’s been a blast working with the students and watching their musical talents develop,” states Sarah Bieber, Waukon High School Vocal Director.  “These kids love to sing, dance and find new ways to express themselves through music. This concert gives them the opportunity to do all three.”

Adam Hooten, choreographer, states, “We have special effects, huge dances and amazing featured soloists. The kids have been working hard this year making the Pops Concert special. This will be an event you don’t want to miss.”

The Pops Concert is open to the public for a free will donation. The general admission seating is on a first come, first served basis in the bleachers and chairs located in the gym. The money raised from this event has been allocated in the past by the Allamakee Music Boosters to help purchase items such as drum line equipment, risers, pianos and various pieces of equipment for all grades, as well as providing scholarships for students attending camps. A Tastefully Simple Bakeless Bake Sale will be going on at the concert as well with numerous items offered. Due to COVID-19 there will not be any refreshments served this year. Masks will also be required to be worn at all times by everyone attending the show. Submitted photos.
