The Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Medical Clinic is now open, offering primary family health care to the entire northeast Iowa area with the opening of its doors for the first time Monday, May 3. The new clinic is located in the former Mayo Clinic building on East Main Street in Waukon, with Mayo Clinic having ceased operations in Waukon in December 2019.

Renovation of the clinic building began in January of this year and was completed in April. The building now meets the privacy and technology needs required by rural health care clinics today.

“Now, with both the Gundersen Clinic and VMH Waukon Clinic, northeast Iowa has the access to primary health care they need and deserve,” VMH officials shared.

The hospital conducted a needs analysis prior to making the determination to open this clinic that showed an overwhelming need for five to seven more providers in the area in order to meet the demand for health care in the local area. To start, the VMH Medical Clinic has one physician, Dr. Dave Schwartz; two Nurse Practitioners including Sue McMillan, ARNP and Halie Ruff, ARNP; and one part-time Physician Assistant, Jon Hawes, PA. The addition of other providers and specialty services is being planned for the future of the clinic.

Anyone with questions or concerns relating to transferring their medical records to the new clinic should call Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon at 563-568-3411 and ask for the Medical Records Department.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Waukon Clinic will be open Monday through Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with a special “sick child” clinic every Monday morning starting at 7 a.m. Evening appointments will also be offered each Thursday until 7 p.m. The hospital’s Urgent Care will also remain available weekdays from 5-7 p.m. and weekends and holidays 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for use when the clinic is closed.
