Waukon Music Department to host its 13th Annual Pops Concert February 24

The Waukon Music Department will be hosting its 13th Annual Pops Concert Friday, February 24 at the Waukon Middle School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the concert performances to begin at 7 p.m.

The Pops Concert is an annual fundraising event sponsored by the Allamakee Music Boosters. The Pops Concert features high energy musical numbers from the 1950s through today.  Groups performing will include the high school and middle school choirs, high school and middle school jazz bands, drumline, featured soloists, song and dance skits, and emcees.   The Pops Concert continues to feature new musical talents each year and has become a must-see event for the Waukon community.

“Our students thoroughly enjoy performing the music for this concert,” states JoAnn Sherman, Waukon High School Band Director.  “We have a wide variety of soloists and groups performing this year. We hope that not only our band and choir families come out to enjoy the concert, but the entire community as well.”
Some of the numbers performed this year by the choirs will include “I Lived” by One Republic, “Never Enough” from the film “The Greatest Showman”, a Taylor Swift Concert Medley, and “Stand by Me” originally performed by Ben E. King. The High School Jazz Band will be featured playing “Choo Choo Cha Boogie”, “Gotta Bone to Pick with You”, “Mr. Blue Sky” and “After the Rain”. The Middle School Jazz Band will perform “Jammin’ with Charlie” and “Power Trip”.  The High School Drum Line will be playing many catchy beats, such as “Jaguar”, “Falcon”, “White Noise”, “Traffic Jam” and more.

“The students are again working incredibly hard to put together a variety of interesting acts, popular music selections from throughout the ages, emcee introductions, small group and solo performances,” states Sarah Bieber, Waukon Vocal Director. “I am always thrilled to see what talents the students in our band and choir programs bring to the yearly Pops Concert. The high school and middle school bands and choirs truly have some of the most dedicated, talented students in our community.”

Tim Lund, Waukon Middle School Band Director, states, “I’m always excited to see the students begin their improvisation journeys in middle school jazz band. We have some fun music that makes improvising accessible and successful for them. I think you’ll enjoy what you hear!”

The Pops Concert is open to the public for general admission seating in the bleachers and chairs located in the gym. No school activity passes or booster club passes will be accepted. Tables, which can seat up to ten people, can be sponsored. Table sponsors can decorate their table, provide snacks/desserts to their guests, and invite family and friends to join in on the memorable night. To reserve a table, contact Brenda Dougherty at 563-568-7997 or by email at waukonpops@gmail.com.

The money raised from this event has been allocated in the past by the Allamakee Music Boosters to help purchase items such as drum line equipment, risers, pianos and various pieces of equipment for all grades, as well as provide scholarships for students attending camps. A Tastefully Simple Bakeless Bake Sale will be going on at the concert as well with numerous items.

In the case of inclement weather Friday, February 24, the make-up date for the concert has been set for Saturday, February 25, also at 7 p.m.
