Donald Ewing

Donald H. Ewing, 84, of Lansing died peacefully at his home in rural Lansing Thursday, May 4, 2023 with his loving wife by his side. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 3 from 2-5 p.m. at Shep’s Riverside Bar & Grill in Lansing. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.

Donald Harry Ewing was born March 17, 1939, the son of Harry and Charlene (Webster) Ewing. He was baptized and confirmed at Forrest Mills Methodist Church in rural Postville and graduated from Waukon High School in 1959.

July 11, 1959, he married Karen Kruger at Forrest Mills United Methodist Church; they had three children: Steven, Dawn and Deneen. They started out farming in Ludlow Township and then moved to Waterloo. Don worked for a Ford dealership where he did alignment on semi trucks and body work on cars, spending his free time working on stock cars and attending the races.

During their time in Waterloo, Don, Karen and the kids spent the weekends back home visiting family on the farm and camping on the Mississippi River. The family eventually moved to Lansing where Don worked for Dave Moritz and Kirk Kious doing autobody work. Don and Karen later divorced.

March 23, 1991, Don married Joanie Opfer (Kelly) and they made a home together in the country.

Don was a fan of spending time in the outdoors: fishing with his favorite dog, Dolly, hunting, and camping with friends and family. He also enjoyed listening to music and late nights dancing. He liked watching westerns and an occasional cartoon on TV and the birds in his backyard. Don was a lifelong Packers and Cubs fan, always dreaming of a trip to Wrigley Field. Don was a loving and gentle man who will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Ewing of Lansing; his children: Steven Ewing, Dawn Ewing and Deneen (Dean) Reiser, all of Lansing; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his step-children: Chad (Kim) Opfer of Gunder and Cindy (Jack) Heffern of Harpers Ferry; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Denise Ribby of Toledo, Dixie (Ron) Nyhiem of Marshalltown and Jackie (Chuck) Buchanan of Neenah, WI.
